Ekin Fil has always offered glimpses. Moments that caught my ear and stuck with me happened with a feeling of inevitability, but her overall statements, the entirety of her albums were missing something. I don’t know if the same will be true with her upcoming tape, Wind Is Near, on Sacred Phrases, but “Captain” is one of those glimpses. The song appears suddenly from a cloud of nothingness, digging its despondent claws deep into the skin. Laconic sonic gestures suggest a fleeting interest the emotional state of those listening through the ether, but the repeated melancholic chords leave a bright red mark.
